Mexican Wedding Photo and Video in Sacramento: Alma and Jesus
We shot Alma and Jesus's wedding in Sacramento on a morning that started gray and stayed soft all day. Leidy on photo, Isaías on video, both of us there from the getting ready at the house to the cutting of the cake. Her mom helped her into the dress
The clouds held all morning. That gave us even light in the room where Alma got ready, no hard windows, nobody squinting.
Her mom helped her into the dress, then knelt down for the shoes. Then she gave her the blessing. Nobody announced it. It just happened, the way it does, and both cameras were already in the room.
Her dad and her three brothers saw her first
Late in the morning the mariachi started outside. Alma walked out in her dress. Her dad and her three brothers were waiting for her.
All four of them cried.
That is the moment this family will pull up in ten years. It is also the reason we run photo and video at the same time. The photo holds her dad's face. The video holds the mariachi behind him and what he said once he could talk again.
The ceremony at St. Joseph Catholic Church
Jesus was already at St. Joseph Catholic Church on El Monte Ave, in a western suit, with his parents, his brothers and sisters, and his friends around him.
The vows, the rings, the arras, the lazo. All of it, the way a traditional Mexican wedding runs.
That part matters more than people outside the family realize. The arras are not a photo op, they are thirteen coins passed from his hands to hers. The lazo goes on while both families are watching. If your videographer does not know the order, he is repositioning during the part you actually wanted.
We know how to move inside a mass. Where we can stand, where we cannot, when to put the camera down. Nobody had to come tell us.
They kissed, and the church got loud.
Golden hour at the reception
The reception was outdoors on private property, ranch style.
That cloud cover we had all morning paid off at the end of the day. It softened everything. When the sun dropped, the sky went pink and blue behind them and they took their first dance in it.
That is the trade with an outdoor reception around Sacramento. An overcast day feels like bad luck at 9am and turns into the best light you will get by 7pm. We plan the portraits around that window instead of fighting it.
A private property also means no venue coordinator telling everyone where to be. Timelines run loose. We plan for that.
Then the banda started
Banda sinaloense, live, and after that the floor did not clear.
Tíos, primos, the kids running through everybody's legs. Alma and Jesus stayed out there with them, all the way through the cake.
We keep shooting through this part. A lot of the best footage from any wedding is not the ceremony. It is your uncle at 10pm.
