Sofia’s Quinceañera in Isleton, California
September 12 was a beautiful day in Isleton, California, as we photographed and filmed Sofia’s quinceañera from the quiet moments before her ceremony all the way to a dance floor she hardly left all night.
We started at home with Sofia’s dress, shoes, and accessories. But there was one more thing she was waiting for: a family friend was bringing a horse for her portraits.
Once the horse arrived, we had a short portrait session before heading to St. Therese Catholic Church in Isleton for the quinceañera Mass.
A Ceremony With a Personal Connection
The priest celebrating Sofia’s Mass had served at the church years earlier and remembered Sofia from the time she had served there as a child. It was one of those small connections that made the ceremony feel especially personal.
After Mass, we organized family portraits at the church before everyone walked outside to the celebration just behind it.
Mariachi, Family, and a Full Dance Floor
Mariachi La Familia was already playing as guests settled in. It was a warm September afternoon, but the Delta breeze made being outside much more comfortable.
There were aguas frescas, birria, desserts, plenty of family, and time for everyone to enjoy the afternoon before the traditional program began.
Sofia danced her vals with her chambelanes, followed by dances with her dad, little brother, and godmother. Her family also shared a toast before a banda sinaloense opened the dance floor.
From that point on, Sofia barely stopped dancing.
She invited family and friends onto the floor, enjoyed every part of her celebration, and was not worried about keeping her dress perfectly clean. That is exactly the kind of moment we want both photographs and film to preserve. Photos let you remember how everyone looked. Film lets you hear the music, the toast, the laughter, and the voices of the people who were there.
